Union Gen. David Birney's division was at Hazel Grove. This is about two miles southwest of Chancellorsville. His men spotted Stonewall Jackson's men marching on the narrow road.

They reported this to Gen. Hooker. He believed that Lee was in retreat and marching south.

Stonewall's 32,000 man column was approx. 10 miles long.
