The 89th NY volunteered to quickly build the Middle Pontoon Bridge. The Union Artillery under Gen. Hunt laid down a protective barrage of cannon fire to assist the bridge builders. That Artillery Tactic was actually used again in World War I. It's called the Box Barrage.

It is interesting that Artillery skills developed in 1862 were used again over 60 years later.
